[SOC] Competance Challenges for Data Modes

Hi all

I have been thinking about the dumbest mistake you can make whilst operating using a data mode.   If you think that CW morse has many opportunities the possibilities are infinitely greater when you include use of digital hardware, and software between you and the rig output.

Qualifying Modes include: - PSK all types, PC generated RTTY, SSTV, Computerised AFSK Morse, etc........

Just to get you started typical "operating" session-

PSK (SSB AFSK direct from soundcard) -


1)    Try to sent CQ call from soundcard with VOX off - spend 20 minutes figuring out why nothing happens when TX is pressed.

2)    Press the send key with an empty TX window - 100 ms of carrier; then silence; spend 10 minutes trying to find out what is wrong (TX window is actually hiding, minimised so that it is not obvious).

3)    Get all that working and call CQ for 20 minutes - finally notice power meter hardly moving - this one is easy - have turned power down to .001 Watts - turn power back up to 40W.

4)    Wonder why "superbrowser" is empty - realise that sound level has been turned down too far - increase and see that 14.015 pass-band is full of signals - spend 5 minutes mesmerised looking at the multiple text lines scrolling across the screen.

5)    There are now only 5 minutes of my spare 1 hour for operating - give up in disgust. ? Isn't Amateur Radio Fun?!

In Case you are wondering......

RX interface comprises 1 audio patch lead from 'phones' output on rig - source: £1 shop (1 of 4 items in pack) .
TX Interface comprises  headphones (£1 shop again) PLUS GPO red Rubber Band (free - - picked up on the street); all being enclosed in a plastics box (£1 for 3).  Sound 'isolation' provided by Kapok dug out of an old cushion.

Software is HRD 4 for rig control, DM780 for QRM generation.
