Hello Ian,
I use to live in a small small community in AZ called *Sun Valley, AZ.
*<http://maps.google.com/maps?hl=en&q=navajo+sun+valley+az&gs_upl=4507l9826l0l10152l20l11l0l5l5l0l924l2985l0.5.4.1.6-1l16l0&bav=on.2,or.r_gc.r_pw.,cf.osb&biw=1254&bih=604&wrapid=tlif132305629991510&um=1&ie=UTF-8&hq=&hnear=0x872fa6b41dbb063d:0xf95e5a1b2076f319,Sun+Valley,+AZ&gl=us&ei=uDzcTq7vDIzcggf5v9nqDA&sa=X&oi=geocode_result&ct=image&resnum=1&ved=0CCcQ8gEwAA>
(Do
Not believe the ads along side the Google Map they are all wrong! I will
guarantee it!)
It is on* Interstate 40* which replaced the *U.S. Route 66* that I think
the world knows about.
In June of 2008 IIRC we had a *"Community Clean UP"* helped in part by
complaints to the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality which brought
out the big guns to Sun Valley from the state Capital in Phoenix, AZ.
We were complaining of our little community being used as a dumping ground
by others living in N.E. Arizona as they did not want to pay the dump fees
for disposal of hazardous materials and also about the local cities making
it very expensive for local members to dump large trash items but not
charging their own citizens.
Also the Hazardous materials dump site would not allow any private dumping
so you were in a catch 22.
We got an agreement from the local city to provide dumpsters to collect
major trash from our citizens and that the AZ EPA would pay the
dump/transportation fees. (This took almost a year and some court time).
Also the EPA came in and cleaned up the 10 areas that had been used for
"Wildcat Dumping" which took *(122) 35'X8'X8'* trash bins alone!
The day of the trash collection the local "CITY?" didn't think we would
fill 2 of those large dumpsters and complained when we asked for 6 of them
but they brought them.
We sorted most items mainly for hazardous materials, and filled the 6 bins
by 10AM!
We ended up filling *18 bins* that day and in follow up cleanup of just
Hazardous materials "Tires, Gas Tanks, Refrigerators, Freezers,
Electronics, Etc:" took another 4 days and filled another *20 bins!*
So far there has not been a follow up to this clean up day but I will bet
there is at least that much more to toss due to the local trash collector
refusal to take large items and the "Cities?" continued high charges.
AZ EPA is keeping an eye on it also and any "Wildcat Dumping" is checked as
soon as reported to the Sheriff now and if anything is found to identify
who did it they are now "Cited" and if convicted in court they are fined
PLUS they have to go out and clean up all of the trash they dropped plus
1000' around it!
We do need to find ways to get rid of trash the right way without gouging
people at the same time.
