Well Bob,
That number 69 alone would qualify Hank, but here is one real live testimonial
about Hank plucked from the QRP-L web list today. Thank you for the info.
Jim / W1FMR
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Nothing I can say or write can do justice to Hank K8DD.
However I wanted to thank him publicly for all he did for me. His kindness, after all is said and done, affected hundreds of other hams. Hank had a broad brush, QRP, Contesting, and DXing.
Hank was tough as nails and fearless, but never mean to anyone. He love to joke around and I never saw him when he wasn?t smiling a lot. There are only a few people that I wish I could be more like, Hank is one of them.
After doing Arkiecon for a few years I took a break, kind of drifting amuck when I got an email from Hank asking what I was up to and I was being way too quiet. A few weeks later he asked if I would set up the ARCI booth in Dallas. This was long before I really was involved with ARCI. So that year Kathy and I went down to Hamcom,we had the time of our lives. In a way Hank had an affect on Kathy's life path as well.
Slowly over time Hank would pull at me to try and do other things like being on the ARCI BOD and helping moderate QRP lists, etc. One of the highlight?s of my life was getting to go to South America with him, his best bud Stan AC8W, and Jim Vinge KB8TXZ. Going through all the airports with tons of gear, spending a week in Suriname, getting a tour of the city of Paramaribo and nearby countryside is something I think of often. Everyone that knows me well, knows I am a homebody for sure. After the trip was planned I tried to back out a few times, Hank would gently push on. I was scared to death to go on that trip. It was truly an adventure, just as he had planned it to be. There are many side stories from this trip that I will tell at another time.
It is always very hard to lose someone you are close to, but for some reason that I can?t explain Hank?s passing is much harder on me than with my own relatives! I look at my family and friends with a new appreciation because of his passing. I just wish he were here so I could thank him in person for all he has done!
There is updated info on Hank on the ARCI web page. http://www.qrparci.org/
