Sandy et al,

I'm an OT too, but please allow me to point out that the FCC did not
ELIMINATE Morse Code as a form of communications. They just eliminated the
requirement to demonstrate proficiency. CW is still alive and well, and I
believe it always will be... as long as the DXers are around anyway.

The strange thing is, every No-Code Tech I know of (and there are a lot
around this area) are all working to become KNOW-Code Techs. I credit that
to a lot of Elmering by local hams, but I know that doesn't exist in a lot
of places as it seems to here.

I'd like to see the CW requirement come back... at least for Amateur Extra.
I'd also like to see the written tests rewritten to actually test knowledge
that is USEFUL to hams. (How many of you have actually needed to know
Voltage-to-Current phase angle differentials while working on ham gear? I
was a RADAR tech in the Air Force for 24 years and never cared about phase
angles, with the exception of motor 'start-capacitors'. You just can't TEST
anything in only 35 (or so) questions, so let's put the TEST back in
TESTING. I know there are a lot of guys in this area that took a good deal
of Elmering before they were 'ready for prime-time'.

BTW, I'm certainly not knocking anybody who got their ticket the
'new-fangled way'. The requirements are what the requirements are... we all
earned our tickets based on that. When I got my Extra, I got an 'Instant
Upgrade' (Interim CG), but still had to drive 4 hours one-way to Chicago to
appear before 'the man'.

BTW... I've noticed that every FCC examiner I appeared before looked like
Sgt Joe Friday from Dragnet. Anybody else have the same recollection?

73,

Mike
