Hello old friend,

Was that frequency 3513 or 3518? I forget - but I remember the guys
who were down there:

W4AX Dave Sheaffer - golden fist - retired Western Union wire chief -
started in radio 1913.
W4ZMQ Marvin Carter - long time employee of General Electric - did
lots of overseas projects.
K4FW - Al Kahn - Founded Electro Voice, and Ten-Tec
W9TO - Jim Ricks - Slow hand Jim - invented TO keyer
K4BI - Jim and I forget his name! Physics professor from GA Tech.
Great CW operator.
W4DA - Ceasar and what did we call him? We worked for Delta Airlines.
N1EA - David Ring - Radio Officer, US Merchant Marine
YV1NX - even in the summer you sprang across the Caribbean - and I
copied you often up in W1 land.

That probably was the best collection of CW operators that ever was on
one frequency. Marvin was a typing champ and typed CW at 55 wpm, W9TO
could do about the same.

We were in good company weren't we?

All but K4BI and W9TO were FOC operators - W4AX and W4ZMQ were two of
my sponsors.

Because W9TO had never been invited to FOC, Marvin W4ZMQ came up with
SOC - the Second Class CW operators club - which still exists today.
Marvin used to sign his social security number after he sent "Both
SOC" - like the FOC boys do!

It doesn't get funnier than that - old slow key Jim - he was like
lightning even in his old age as was Al Kahn K4FW - but they all had
one thing in common - they were all gentlemen.

Only two of the gang left - YV1NX and N1EA.
