I was talking to Fergus YV1NX about the old 3513 kHz net - lots of
good operators - only two of that group left - but it plays into the
very foundation of SOC.
Gathered nightly on 3513 (or was it 3518?) were the following - all running QSK.
W4AX Dave Sheaffer
W4ZMQ Marvin Carter
K4FW - Al Kahn
W9TO - Jim Ricks
K4BI - Jim and I forget his name!
W4DA - Ceasar and what did we call him? We worked for Delta Airlines.
YV1NX - even in the summer you sprang across the Caribbean - and I
copied you often up in W1 land.
That probably was the best collection of CW operators that ever was on
one frequency. Marvin was a typing champ and typed CW at 55 wpm, W9TO
could do about the same.
We were in good company weren't we?
All but K4BI and W9TO were FOC operators - W4AX and W4ZMQ were two of
my sponsors.
Because W9TO had never been invited to FOC, Marvin W4ZMQ came up with
SOC - the Second Class CW operators club - which still exists today.
Marvin used to sign his social security number after he sent "Both
SOC" - like the FOC boys do!
What a gas!
