Tom,

Splicing should not present any problems.  Just make a smooth
transition so there are no 'pigtails' sticking out that might cause a
blip in the impedance.

As far as the 'approximate' impedance, you can measure the conductor
diameters and the center-to-center spacing and calculate using info
from the Handbook or compare the dimensions to published data.
