I cheated on that one, using the correct English name and looking up a
direct term when stumped.  The Spotted Owl is an endangered species in our
Northwest, the source of great contention between our tree huggers and our
tree cutters --  hence the recipe.  The problem is that "spotted" wants to
translate as "soiled."  Root word is "Schmutz"  and that made total sense at
the time. I think "mottled" (geflekt) would have been a better choice, but I
was wrapped up in the correct English term.  A good example of what does not
translate.
