Hi Bob,
De Funès is "of course" vy well-known here. He has made some vy good
(read funny) films. His "grimaces" are famous even if from time to
time, IMHO, he was using them "a bit too much".
The series of "Gendarmes" are maybe the most famous films. I know they
have been exported in various countries.
BTW, St. Tropez did not have any squadron of gendarmes till 3 months ago.
A recent reorganization btwn police & army (gendarmes are soldiers)
has assigned St. Tropez from police forces back to a squadron of
gendarmes. Of course this has made the News some months ago bcoz of
the De Funès's films.
Jacques Tati is different repertoire.
De Funès was a clown, even if some films were some satire of the
society.
Tati made a deep analysis of our "modern" era. Un grand Monsieur !
"Jour de Fête" is also a good one.
