Not entirely related but close. In the late 1950's our then top pop star, the
late great, Johnny O'Keefe [the wild one] lost a court case where sought tax
deductions for his suits.
The court held that as the suits could be used for everyday purposes, a
deduction was inappropriate.
"Yeah right" said the great J.O.K. "As if I'd be seen dead on the streets
wearing pink, purple or imitation tiger skin suits" - Remember this is 1950's in
ultra-conservative Sydney.
Top rocker in his time. He was banned from our Town Hall because the Mayor and
Council thought he would promote lewd behaviour or "even worse" among us
teenagers. Pathetic when you look back.
At the time, in real life he was an economist with degrees from Sydney
University, a qualified accountant *AND* a tax expert. The establishment didn't
like him, teenagers adored him.
His family owned a very substantial furniture business in the heart of Sydney
and his younger brother became a Commissioner against Corruption, later a
Supreme Court Judge. Not a family of dummies, yet he lost the case.
Sadly for Australia's music industry he died of a heart attack at a relatively
young age.
