The TV tax claimed to a Saint of the 8th century [ 2003-01-06 22:46 ]
BERLIN (Reuters) - the organization of collection of the German TV tax had to
present excuses, Monday, after having addressed a letter of complaint to a
Saint who lived in the eighth century. "It was rather awkward", declared
Eckhard Ohliger, person in charge for organization GEZ of Cologne, which
collects 6,5 billion euros per annum from the German televiewers.
"Unfortunately, errors can occur."
The father Karl Terhorst said to have received letters of the GEZ requiring the
payment of the monthly tax of 16,15 euros, intended for "Mrs. Walburga St." and
addressed to the catholic church of Ramsdorf, 120 km in the east of Cologne.
"I initially did not take account of these mails", said Terhorst. "But after
the last letter, which threatened the Saint one of legal proceedings and a fine
of 1.000 euros if the payment did not intervene, I said myself that it was time
to answer them", he indicated.
Terhorst then informed the organization that St. Walburge, born in England in
710, was an abbess and missionary having played an important part in the
francic Church of Saint Boniface. She directed a monastery and was canonized in
880.
