Failure of a crossing of the Antarctic using sled and kite
[2003-01-03 15:36]

DUBLIN (Reuters) - The two Irish that tried to cross the Antarctic on
sleds powered by kites have been constrained to give up, due to lack of wind.

Brian Cunningham, 59 years, and Jamie Young, 52 years, report on the
web site devoted to their expedition (http://www.icekites.com) that
their adventure has "failed because of the quasi total absence of wind".

"The region has known a unusually calm time in this period of
Christmas and, according to local meteorologists, these conditions
would have lasted for the main part of the month of January", have
they declared in their message sent Thursday.

The two adventurers said they are "frustrated and upset", but remain
"convinced that the concept will make it way and will some day
revolutionize travels in polar areas".

The duet had arrived to the South Pole on Sunday and had planned
to reach Patriot Hills, to the other end of the continent, after a
10 days trip of 1.040 Km (646 miles).

Equipped of ultralight sleds in titanium and aluminium as well as of
five kites of different sizes to adapt to the wind, the two men hoped
to make their expedition in less than 14 days, against 60 habitually
necessary with dogs and sleds.

Their engines had theoretically allowed them to reach the speed of 48
Km/h (30 mph).
