This was featured heavily in the UK press. In fairness, Jim, the vast
majority of the French were horrified and deeply embarrassed by this, to the
extent that Jacques Chirac himself has sent a sincere personal message of
regret to the Queen.
Apparently, to a native French speaker the language used suggests that the
graffiti was possibly the work of a member of France's large immigrant
community - not of a Frenchman. It is unlikely, for example, that any
Frenchman would make the mistake of drawing a swastika pointing the wrong
way round.
