Wot about the "scummy" ones which auto install themselves on your PC without
permission? They do, you prolly don't visit the sites that promote this crap.
Some of this cutesy stuff or even helpful stuff on your PC often has sinister
intents. Some report back your surfing habits, some create pop ups in your face
which are not caused by the site you visit - you thought it did.
The scummiest of all is when people come to my site for example, say to themselves
"I'll buy that book Ian recommends and the small commission helps out"
*AND*
the scumware installed on your PC, sometimes without your knowledge or permission,
inserts it's ID in lieu of mine. Bet few people knew that one. That SUX.
It's become so bad that a few of us, very few, are fighting back. If you have any
scumware we are able to detect on your PC you won't get into my site anymore.
Unfortunately there's plenty more we can't detect.
After lots of complaints and bitter arguments, Amazon for one have now made it an
offence to steal affiliates commissions. They've closed two major accounts
[forfeiting the accumulated commissions] in the last week. The scum will find
another way though.
One scumware removal tool is "AdAware":

See if you can get into my site?

It's a jungle out there.
