True (almost sure of it). And speaking French is not needed to enter the FFL. 
So imagine how funny it must be there ...
I said "almost sure" for 2 reasons :
1/ part of the officers are (native) Frogs
2/ I _think_ I have heard of French guys entering the Legion for the following 
reason :

True (100% sure !). Your "criminal records" are erased if you stay 4 (5?) years 
in the FFL.
BTW, that is the main reason for "a lot" of people to sign in ... along with 
the following :

True (100% sure). Besides the erasing of your criminal records, you 
are "awarded" citizenship. What a reward ... !!!

Besides that, the French meaning of the acronym FFL is "Forces Fran�aises 
Libres", "Free French Forces", Resistance movement during WWII. Funny to read 
FFL abt the Legion ;o)
