Ok,
I accept your point but given that when cooked, onions do not hurt the eyes,
is it
not possible that the elimination of the coding for this particular protein
from the
plant's genome might not affect the flavour of the cooked vegetable at all?
Chances are that it'd ruin the chees'n'onion sarnie though ;-)
Paul
p.s. I personally have no problem with genetic modification of foodstuffs
per se.
(It's been done for thousands of years - only more slowly) but I *am*
suspicious
when large multi-nationals expound the benefits with regard to feeding the
hungry
when what they're really trying to do is force farmers to grow crops that
are
engineered to be resistant to a particular herbicide in which they have a
substantial
financial interest. Also engineered (if my memory serves me correctly) to
produce
non-viable offspring and thus force said farmers to go back to the
manufacturers
for more (expensive) seed when planting time comes around again.
P :-(
