A volcano on the point to give birth to an island near Sicily
[2002-11-25 20:21]

ROME (Reuters) - The seismic activity is such in the region that a volcano
submerged for 171 years at about thirty kilometres in the South of Sicily, not
far from Tunisia, has chances to redo surface in the next weeks, declared to
Reuters Enzo Boschi, director of the Italian Institute of Geophysics and
Vulcanology.

The last appearance of the island formed by the summit of the volcano, in July,
1831, had lead to territorial quarrels between Great Britain, Spain and Sicily,
which claimed it.

Six months later, the island of a five kilometers circumference had again
disappeared under streams, terminating the diplomatic debate.

This time, Sicilian divers took their precautions by planting a flag on the
summit of the volcano, at present immersed in eight meters deep, to consolidate
the Italian demands as soon as the island will redo surface.
