[SOC] So ... let's speak abt sport for a while

Hmmm,

<politically incorrect>

The Pakistani camp in the past seem to have interpreted the
'Rules of Cricket' in a fairly generous fashion anyhow.

(i.e. The Pakistani umpires at home will give the benefit of
doubt to the home team wherever possible).

This led to a famous spat on the pitch between Mike Gatting
and whoever the official was on the pitch when England were
away on tour.

Mike was definitely out of order (according to the rules ...),
but the umpire more so (Venkat? - Am I opening myself
up for libel accusation here?)

/<politically incorrect>

It led to a change in the rules of Test Cricket whereby one
of the umpires had to come from an independent country;
I think that was what was intended.

When this rule was introduced, I was greatly saddened; it
implied that there are officials within the game (internationally)
that are partisan and will give decisions based not upon the
rules but rather upon team or national loyalties and thus need
an independent adjudicator to resolve any conflict.

It may well be viewed as arrogant (prob'ly is) but I believe
that England has the best umpires in the world. Dickie Bird
(recently retired sadly ) to name but one. Oz umpires are
similarly respected (not sycophantic, Ian. Simply an expression
of opinion). Other countries qualify also.

To think that Dickie (or any other with similar integrity) might
weigh a decision in favour of an English Test team simply
because they're English is so foreign to the ethos of the game
that it disgusts me.

It just would not be cricket.

'Nuff said. Again...
