Hi agn ang agn,

Friday time ... I am about to send to this ML 2 pieces of news. The 1st one is
serious, the 2nd (separate email) is more for the fun.

Let's start with the serious one. If you accept some "unpolitically correct
comment", then I should say that this is some SOC way of escaping the
justice ...

Tens of condemned to death in Pennsylvania could have safe life because of an
error of syntax [ 31/05/2002 10:33 ] PHILADELPHIA (AP) -- tens of condemned to
death of Pennsylvania could escape their fate because of an error of syntax. In
November, the serial killer George Banks, condemned for the murder of 13 people
in 1982, was pardonned by a Court of Appeal which judged that the instructions
provided to the jury at the time of the lawsuit were not clear. If this
decision is confirmed by the federal supreme Court, about thirty prisoners
could profit from the same chance, announced the ministry of Justice. "We try
to determine if a sentence of 17 words is too long to be understood", commented
on Ron Eisenberg, prosecutor at the office of the prosecutor of Pennsylvania.
In this State of the North-East of the United States, the death penalty can be
imposed only whenever the jury admits unanimously that the crime
includes "aggravating circumstances" - such as torture. The capital punishment
can however be rejected so at least one of the jyru member thinks that the
culprit profits from "extenuating circumstances" - if it suffers from
psychosis, for example.
According to the Court of Appeal, the sentence which was used to explain this
crucial condition until the end of 1980 was ambiguous and gave to think that
the jury has to vote unanimously in all the cases. Since 1973, Pennsylvania
condemned 343 people to death. Only three of them have been executed, by lethal
injection. All could have profited from the judgement of the Court of Appeal.
One of the condemned, Keith Zettlemoyer, had disputed his judgment before being
put at death, in 1995. AP
