Hi Terry,

A quick note before racing off for snot shot. Well done, both on dropping
power and on being rigorous about assuming actual attenuation.

I'm now receiving SOC tfc and sending also, so no need to cc me. But I
appreciate it. Very quickly, you will bust Diz's initial entry. More
important, it becomes a game that a wider variety of piggies can play.
Even tho it won't be a record breaker, getting down to 1/2 watt with Claude
helps establish the principle. And maybe with an attenuator, we can go
lower. Last night was better than previous. He was legal QSO at 2 watts,
but not pretty. Condtions not ideal .

I have to ask you what's wrong with the following >If this attenuator
> seems to be strict Kosher, I'll write it up for Bacon Bits.

You will have seen my posting to SCO. Nobody has risen to the bait trolled
as TOC 1, OCC 3 and GBBE. I maintain that all TOCs are TOC #1 because they
are too dumb to recognize each other. It does lead to some interesting
questions as to how they breed.
------
Worked a guy on FISTS freq, pretty nearly his first CW QSO. Steered him to
FISTS and volunteered to be his code buddy for a while. Sends pretty well
with keyer and that throws you off on what he can receive. Sent him the
following that you might find interesting.

I've never been a code coach before, but I have years of coaching
experience. I think we teach code the wrong way -- simply getting the
letters in a perfect environment and then increasing speed. I think we
should start with letters and simple words in the cleanest environment we
can manage (remember my sending isn't perfect, either). But then rather
than increase speed, we should add complexity at the same speed. For
example, QRM or a weak signal. There are two reasons. First, in the real
world you can control speed by asking for the other guy to repeat or QRS.
You can't do much about the other problems. Second, the real goal is to
communicate under nonperfect conditions that include faulty keying by the
other party. Trust me, you can't do nuthin about how the other guy sends.
So, as we go along, you can turn down your RF gain so that the signal is
weak. Or I can switch to lower power without warning or change keying
style.
---
Certainly, higher speed helps you cope with poor conditions at lower speed;
but it doesn't get a newbie through the first QSOs. You don't take a
beginning driver on the interstate until he/she can negotiate the hazards of
low traffic neighborhoods.

1/2 watt willy
