Obviously I had to truncate a long and thoughtful post but the sentiments expressed were
not entirely dissimilar to what I hear in Australia on a regular basis..
Now for the tiny minority who do not know, I've been actively involved in politics in
Australia (both sides) since a boy in 1949.
If your are unhappy with your particular political party (of whatever persuasion) then
join it.... work for change.
You can't lower yourself to be involved in the political process?
Fine, in my eyes you forfeit all right to comment, complain, winge...
Perhaps you may be happier with a dictatorship neo-Zimbabwe style?
Nothing p****es off people directly involved in the democratic process, of whatever party,
in whatever democratic country than to hear people (and I'm NOT singling Adam out here)
who slag off at our democratic systems. They may be flawed but that might reflect your
lethargy in not involving yourself.
A lot Adam said was true, what can you do about it except winge and whine?
Become involved in the party of your choice. Can't lower yourself? The alternative is
staring you in the face.
The biggest threat to democracy today is *NOT* external forces, just our own stupidity and
apathy. One day we will wake up and find it all lost, stolen from within by those with
vested interest.
As a matter of fact - there is no such thing as a corrupt politician - there are certainly
corrupt people who, for venal desire, will either advance themselves or others to do their
bidding in the political process. We vote for them, we abdicate the watchful role and we
will reap our own reward.
My political nous tells me that much of the democratic world today is re-living the early
1930's....
"Those who refuse to learn from history are doomed to repeat it".
Next time you criticise our respective political processes, US, Britain, Canada,
Australia, France, New Zealand and a host of others where we are lucky just remember one
thing I was taught as a lad by my Dad.
"I am responsible" - the "don't blame me" mentality is a giant cop out...
FWIW
