Okay, these are too good not to share. 1040 out of Des Moines is usually good on
pronunciation, but here are a couple slips I've heard recently.
A few days ago, a female newsanchor was talking about fishing at Lake Rathbun, which
is well known for it's crappie fishing. It's not uncommon to haul in 100-200 in a
day (they breed like rabbits and there's no limit so no problem is presented with
that). Anyhoo, she said "and crappie fishing is getting good down at Lake Rathbun".
The problem? Crappie is pronounced with a long a, i.e. Crah-pee. She pronounced it
with a short a, so it came out "crappy fishing is good down at Lake Rathbun".
And here is the BEST slip 'o the tongue yet. Just now, they were talking about a
bunch of geese that were found dead up north. Said the newsanchor: "A farmer
apparently sprayed insecticide on his nearby field which appears to have drifted to
the geese and killed them." At least that's what he MEANT to say. He actually said,
"A nearby farmer sprayed 'incest'-icide on..."
That sounds like a spray they'd have to use down in Kentucky, not Iowa :^D
