[SOC] Silly ham talk

Ray, yes this is one I've latched on to. It seems to me, that it first
appeared in use by foreign hams. I could be wrong on that, but I think I
heard it more in QSOs involving foreign stations. Naturally, (why do we
have to 'copy' so?) then the North American hams in conversation with those
returned the same. Perhaps a habit picked up from there. In other words,
if the foreign ham used it in the QSO, the NA ham, rather than replying "my
name is ...... " mimicked the other operator and returned using "the
personal here is...."

With the high population of DX (foreign) stations on 10 m. SSB, that might
account for its familiarity on that band.

On the other hand, perhaps it did come from the CB ranks. I have no idea.
I simply figured that hearing it more from foreign stations, it might have
had its origin there. Perhaps originally as a language issue. Bear in mind
that for many of these stations we so easily talk to, English is not their
primary language and translation oddities do occur.

The term "handle" seems to have gained a CB stigma. It started of course in
ham use, but was so widely adopted by the CB community, that I think a lot
of us now consider it part of that lingo and decline to use it. It still
seems to me that the old fashioned word "name" aptly fits in helping to
identify us individually. I kinda like using it. As in, ".... my name is
Dan....."
