Attempt of crossing the Antarctic using sled and kites

DUBLIN (Reuters) - Two Irish ready to tempt an original achievement, the 
crossing of the Antarctic using sleds moved by kites.

Brian Cunningham, 59 years, and Jamie Young, 52 years, have planned a journey 
of 1.040 km from the South Pole, where they have arrived on Monday, to Patriot 
Hills at the other end of the continent, has declared to Reuteurs Christine 
Cunningham, the wife of one of the two adventurers.

"This were two stressful weeks, without knowing when they were going to begin 
and they have called last night by satellite telephone to tell that they had 
finally taken a plane", has declared Christine Cunningham.

Equipped of ultralight sleds made of titanium and aluminium as well as of five 
kites of different sizes to adapt to the wind, the two men wish to make the 
trip in less than 14 days, against the 60 usually needed with dogs and sleds.

Their engines can theoretically allow them to reach the high speed of 48 
km/hour. They will go so quickly all the more because in this period of the 
year, it is the middle of Summer in the south hemisphere with 24 h daylight, 
which will allow them to travel 18 hours per day .

But they will not avoid the cold, average temperatures being around -20 C.

The two men hope that their trip will allow them to show the pertinence of this 
new mean of transportation for polar regions.
