Yes that part was totally uncalled for and I'd doubt you would find any of them
from that period who are not thoroughly ashamed of their actions.
Why they did that I don't know. I recall vividly in the late 1960's some of our
troops being sprayed with red paint as they passed the Town Hall in Sydney.
But with all things, these were a minority for whom the majority get tarred
with. Happens every time.

If it is in decline (ditto Australia) it has more to do with the me, me, greed
is good mentality as opposed to a more caring society which looked out for their
neighbours, tried to do the right thing, respected and assisted the elderly,
respected the police and considered it an honour to perform some public service,
if only as a boy scout or girl guide.
Example:
Only yesterday I politely spoke to a young fellow (about 16 - 18) who nearly
knocked down an elderly lady on the footpath with his bicycle.
"What the f*** has it got to do with you Pops? The stupid old bitch shouldn't
get in my way! What a p***head!"
Ten years ago I'd have punched his lights out, today I'd be charged with assault
and his lawyer would sue me for $500,000 while they collected $25,000 in victims
of crime compensation.
Not an isolated instance, I rest my case.
PS: At the risk of being branded a misogynist (sp?), I blame their mothers, in
fact nearly all mothers who gave birth any time after 1965. Kids born before
then seem to be one thing, those afterward are a different culture, dunno why,
just is...
I'm deadly serious. Women who want to beat me up should know that at the moment
the end of the queue is somewhere west of Kalgoolie, Western Australia. You are
welcome to the wait.
