[SMCARA] [External] Net Reminder

Hi Rob,

I won't be able to make the net tonight, as I will be helping serve up pancakes at our church. Tonight is Fat Tuesday (or Shrove Tuesday to us Episcopalians), so pancakes for dinner tonight!

I have been using a Larsen 2/70 Thru the Glass antenna for probably 25 years! It works great for me and there is a k it available if you decide to move it to another car/truck. It is basically a 1/2 wave, end fed. There is a matching device that goes on the inside of the glass which requires careful placement. It must be clear of embedded antenna and window defrost wires, or you will not have good results. Some tinted windows that use metallic tinting will also cause issues in tuning. Newer cars don't seem to have the problem.

A 5/8 wave antenna in the middle of the roof will work a bit better, but also whacks trees and garage door openers! If you really want a low visible impact antenna, a quarter wave whip does remarkably well at the cost of a dB or so in gain.

Soap box: Any outside antenna will make your HT work better than the "rubber duck", a.k.a rubber dummy load"! My favorite is the "Hershey Kiss", mini mag mount antennas that are available at every hamfest in the world. They run about $12 to $ 15 and work great. Asking an HT with a rubber duck to be solid into the repeater is a stretch!

Folks,

TheSMCARA weekly net will be held tonight at 7:30PM on the 146.640 (PL: 146.2)repeater, hopefully you will have a few minutes to check in. The topic fortonight will come from a recent antenna conversation I had, have you used glass mount dual band mobile antennas? If so, your opinion on their performance?
