Ren and June-
I will be out of town that weekend, on my way to South Carolina to watch
the eclipse, and hopefully make a few QSOs during the totality!
Three notes:
I know Walt. Good man. We should support him anyway we can. Wish I could
take the lead, but see previous note.
With regards to the "child safe" course Ren referenced, better known as
"Youth Protection Training".... the training is available online at '
my.scouting.org.' the training is only a 1/2 hour long and rivals anything
that NMCI and NKO has produced. Seriously, it's good quality but an easy
online course. There is often temptation to just click through it like a
standard NKO course. But we as a club don't have to take it. We are
invited quests under the supervision of trained leaders. The leaders must
take it. The key thing to remember is "two deep." If you have one child,
then have two adults. If you have one adult, then have two children. Past
that, always keep the cubs in sight of another adult and another scout.
And that is the sum of YPT.
Also, if we were to set up like Field Day, or just simply run stations at
the museum, scouts and public are invited to join us if they wish... then
we do not need YPT.
A Girl Scout leader may try to tell you differently, but the GSUSA have
different rules, and this is a BSA event. Actually it's a World Scouting
Organization event, but that's a different story....
Jamboree on the Air has been combined with Jamboree on the Internet. This
is out of recognition that so many places have poor HF/DXing capability,
and have often harnessed the capability of Echolink, D-Star, IRLP and all
that other ways that you can link to people over the internet. no need to
set up a station. If you can take a couple of laptops, link to various
known nodes and talk to the world. It is JOTI just as much as JOTA.
I can tell you that if you want to set up some sort of node for use on any
of the internet capable programs, then I will send word to K2BSA. I can
tell you that there are clubs out there that will try to contact you even
if you only have one Echolink node.
Hope that helps.
