Chris, I have one and a few antenna accessories for it.  I only use it on our Tuesday night net and then only if I am having reception problems with my 2m Kenwood mobile.    I have switched to a longer antenna which makes quite a difference.  I have no problems with reception for the net but I usually move out to my car to get clear of house wiring and RF.  I will say that I have only used it on 2m and have only used it to scan 70cm.   I see you that you might be in the mountains and I have no experience with my HT on the move in that environment.
