Today the final step was taken to upgrade/update the Smithfield repeaters. A couple months ago the UHF repeater was installed. It runs a mere 20 watts with the antenna at 320 feet (same as VHF). Frequency is 442.825 (+5) tone 100Hz.
The VHF repeater was also updated to the same unit as on UHF. Both now support the latest Yaesu DR-1X automatic analog/digital system. (See the System Fusion PDF in the files section.) New Arcom controllers are utilized.
If you have or have been considering the Yaesu C4FM, try it out on 442.825 or 147.195.
Both repeaters are have dual-band capabilities offering backup redundancy. The IRLP, EchoLink, and VHF-UHF remote base capabilities remain in tact.
The old Maggorie and CAT-1000 units will be kept as yet another back up.
Not only can you now operate analog or digital voice modes but also voice and digital data simultaneously. This is a huge asset to the EOCs.
If you wonder why not D-Star instead of C4FM-FDMA, it's due to the greater flexibility of System Fusion, wider amateur acceptance, and faster data speeds (see DigitalCommunicationsGuide in the files section).
If you travel between Williamsburg, Virginia Beach, and the NC state line, we hope you try out and enjoy the new system!
