I have never had any problems with them, except as you point out, when they are under a pulling type of strain.  Your "YMMV" caveat is appropriate!

I'm curious why you don't recommend the roll pins?  Other than if you drop one, you will probably never find it again! I haven't tried the little connector locks from WMR, but will look into it as I am sure I will suffer a disconnect in the coche at the most inopportune time!

I would advise AGAINST using APP's in a mobile installation.  Why?  They are not as positive locking as compared to other connector configurations and in a mobile installation you have shock and vibration to deal with (Not so at the shack/in the field).  If you feel you must go that route be very sure that you...

1.  use super glue to adhere the two sides together  (do not use the roll pins that come with them) 2.  Use one of the connector locks that you can get from west mountain radio et.al. to keep both sides held together so they wont shake/rattle/roll apart.
