As a data point for those thinking about a vanity call sign, I just renewed mine via W5YI for about $30 including the FCC fee. I am good for another 10 years.
If you don't want to pay the FCC fee the renewal is free on line or 7 to 8 bucks for W5YI to process. ARRL has a similar renewal scheme. I could've renewed my license for free if I was an ARRL Member, if not I could pay $39 for membership plus another $26 something for the FCC vanity license fee. So for less than $70 I could renew my license with ARRL. Regular generated license are free to ARRL members.
Bottom line--There is upfront long term costs to a vanity call vs the regular calls are free to renew online via FCC database.
