Good morning all,
I thought I'd send out an update about FD regarding the PIO stuff I
volunteered to do. It's a long one but try to stay awake to the end. :)
Media = 100pts
Our radio spot has been airing on 97.7 (rock station) for about a week
or so now and Rene reported last week that it's on (I think) the country
station as well. I don't know who handles the reporting for the club
after FD is over but if you'd let me know if we need a recording of the
spot to get the 100 points I'll try to get a copy. I'm sending out the
press release to the newspapers today so if you see FD listed in an area
paper save a copy for the club, it would be easier to submit for the
(same) 100 points than a radio recording. We're also listed on SOMD.com
on the community calendar and on the community calendar for the county
(Thanks Tom).
Public official = 100pts
Senator Waugh is scheduled to come by and see us on Saturday at 3pm so
somebody make sure to get a photo with him, he's worth 100 points. He
won't be there long so don't be shy! I've invited all of our County
Commissioners and state Delegates but haven't heard from a single one.
I'll resend the invitations today and maybe one will show up. If you
happen to know any of them extend a personal invitation if you can. If
Senator Waugh doesn't show up a Commissioner or Delegate will earn us
the same 100 points.
Emergency service = 100pts
I'm also hoping to see Sheriff Cameron and perhaps Bob Kelly from St.
Mary's County Government - Emergency Services & Technology. A photo with
one of those guys is worth another 100 points. I also extended the
invitation to Sheriff Cameron to have his Officers stop in and check us
out at any time, so you overnight guys shouldn't be surprised when a
patrol car shows up at 2am. He's just looking for coffee and to see what
we're up to. If any of you know volunteer fire fighters be sure to
invite them to come out as well.
Welcome table = 100pts
I haven't heard any mention of the Welcome table but we really should
have one. Which means we'll need some volunteers to man the table to say
Hello and hand out fliers. I think it should be manned from 2pm - 8pm on
Saturday if possible. I'm looking for volunteers willing to sit on their
butts, smile, shake hands and hand out paper. It's a tough job but
someone has to do it. :) If you can fill a one or two hour time slot let
me know so I can make a schedule. And if there's any info out there
about a table, a banner and information fliers send me an email, I'm
happy to get it all together. We've missed our chance to order fliers
from the ARRL but I can use their PDF's to print some at Staples if we
need them.
Kids = 100pts
My daughter Eudora (KC3DQB) will be hanging out with me and lending a
hand as well. I'll be sure to get her on a station for at least one QSO,
worth 20pts. We can earn a total of 100pts for youth QSO's so if your
youngin's join you for your visit to FD be sure to get them on a radio.
Forget the points!
It's cool (and easy) for the club to earn extra points towards the
not-a-contest FD event. But, more importantly, this is our chance to
share what we love about the hobby with the public, public officials,
emergency services and with kids. I hope we'll all be good emissaries,
lend a hand if possible and share the excitement we feel about whatever
aspect of amateur radio warm our tubes.
What have I missed?
