Hah!  Back to the future!

Way back, when, we had a very robust USA wide 1200 baud (really!) packet network with digis all over the place and many bulletin boards.  There were huge node stacks (there was one up at Andrews that covered many frequencies and had an HF outlet (300 baud).  There was a little internet activity then, with 1200 or 2400 baud dial-up!

Along came broadband internet and "Sayonara, 1200 baud AX-25 packet radio (except APRS for which 1200 baud is fine)"!

It worked.

So I have been looking at a lot of technology in trying to identify viable ways to communicate over a large area with a Technician Class license without HF. Here is an oldie but goodie that may resemble the early stages of WIFI. Seems packet may be making a come back. Here is the video:

If you look close enough they have TNC kits for the Raspberry Pi and the Beagle Bone Black. ($40 not bad)
