[SMCARA] Noise/RFI

Check for "uninterruptible power supplies" associated with computers.

I don't know what they might do on HF, but I had one making a terrible
spectrum of noise on VHF. Of course, tripping the breakers or unplugging it
did nothing because the thing kept running.

Once identified (using my FT-817 and a 5 el 2 meter beam), I carried it
outside and tossed it the trash still running!

The noise was gone!

Subject: [SMCARA] Noise/RFI

Wayne, WD4MNP has been experiencing a lot of RFI that appears to be external
to his house. He tripped every breaker in the box, as well as the main
feeder breaker, and the noise was still there (rig running on battery!).

Has anyone experienced noise from the new "electronic" power meters now
being installed by SMECO? That noise would not be affected by pulling the
main feeder breaker. SMECO would have to come out and pull the meter in
order to make a noise reading.

Does anyone have an 80 meter DFer? That would help nail down the source.

FYI. I have a fairly (2-3 yr) recent Trane heat pump with variable speed
blower feature. The motor control unit makes a bunch of noise! Toroids and
shielding some wires helps, but it still cranks it out. Strip lighting that
uses switching power supplies are horrible. Some Routers are noise makers.
Some flat screen/plasma TVs are notorious as are light dimmers. Anything
with an electronic "brain" is suspect.
