I find that a little levity helps in technical discussions!

I appreciate this conservation. Being new I get to learn all kinds of thinks from you guys. Next time I'm trying to work a rare DX....I'm moving my F-150 out of the garage to improve my "natural polarization shift". Hi Hi

70 dB loss might be a bit pessimistic! 20 dB is the general rule of thumb for path loss due to cross polarization. If your path excess is 18 dB and with the 20 dB effect of cross polarization, the result is "No signal, grasshopper"! You can Google this, but standby for some high powered math!

Same thing on HF, but to a lesser extent due to natural polarization shift caused by nearby objects, trees, your house, a fence, the Earth, that F-150, as well as atmospheric and propagation effects (skip).

Always remember "Clarke's First Law of Antennas";: "If it sounds/looks stupid, but it works, it's not stupid"!

        Wonderful stuff!

I was under the impression that SSB/CW was done in HORIZONTAL polarization and FM work was done in the vertical. I know there is no set "law" saying as much but there is that pesky 70db loss thing if you try to work a station horizontal if you are vertical and the other station is opposite.
