[SMCARA] encryption on St. Mary's Co. trunked system - public forum

They are not using P25 Phase 2 yet, although I believe that is
eventually the plan. Right now the Sheriff and MSP are using encrypted
P25 Phase 1.

It's true that the PSR-800 is the only scanner capable of receiving P25
Phase 2 TDMA right now, and the company that manufactures it has gone
out of business. Also, the performance of most P25-capable scanners in
a simulcast overlap interference environment leaves a lot to be
desired. Eventually the scanner radio market will catch up, just like
it took many years before scanners could properly track conversations on
the "analog" Motorola and EDACS trunked systems. Although it may take a
few years for this to happen, it's much less of a problem than the
indiscriminate use of encryption, for which there is ultimately no
workaround.
