I am a big fan of the Buddiepole system and have used them on several DXPeditions as well as portable/field day use. I share all of Dan's observations and also highly recommend using an antenna analyzer to get it set up. The MFJ works great and there are several other smaller ones out there that fit nicely into your pack.
In the interest of full disclosure, I am a personal friend of Budd, W3FF the designer, and his son Chris W6HFP who runs the company. I have no financial interest in the company, just a happy user of the antennas
Amp-wise, I use a K5OOR HFPacker Amp which is small and takes the 817 up to 35 watts or so. There are also some Italian amps that run 50 or 100 watts out. The HF packer is a kit and is also available as a 100watt version. TenTec and Elecraft make "afterburners" also that could be used.

Subject: [SMCARA] Any buddipole users?
I am looking into a portable antenna to use with my FT-817ND. The Buddipole seems to have good reviews. Anyone on the list has any experience with one? Other recommendation for a similar setup?
Looking for any feedback on the antenna system or limitations encountered. My goal is to have a light/portable and flexible system for emergency use.
Carlos
