Just as an attempt to share test results, I just completed my power checks
for my go box this afternoon using an FT-857D, Buddipole Deluxe Antenna, 3x
18ah SLA batteries (model PS-12180F2), 2x 40Watt Solar Panels and a power
meter from powerwerx (
http://www.powerwerx.com/digital-meters/dc-inline-watt-meter-power-analyzer-bare-wire.html).
While tuned to 28.515MHz USB and identifying my tests with my callsign
my XYL helped me to record the following numbers during the transmissions.
Power (Watts) Amps
5 1.7
10 2.61
15 3.02
20 3.37
25 3.65
30 3.81
35 4.87
40 5.15
45 6.59
50 7.08
During normal un-squelched receive the radio pulls 0.6 amps.
With these numbers the FT-857D is going to make a great portable rig. I can
run 40watts just on the power provided by the solar panels and 20 watts
during the night to run on battery all night long.
