[SMCARA] Winter 180/80m action and experimentation

We're talking some serious counterpoise action here! A quarter wave
vertical on 160 should be a real performer, with a decent counterpoise.

Years ago I did field day down at Roger Chandler's (N3AGJ SK) place in
Ridge. He had a wonderful buried ground field around a mounting block
for a vertical that the Navy used for some testing and thoughtfully left
it for Roger! It was in a field adjacent to his house that also served
as a grass runway (Chandler Field on old sectionals). *

I took my Butternut Vertical down and hooked it up to the copper plate
that was the terminus for the 120, 150 foot copper radials. Did I
mention this was a gangbuster of a ground plane! That Butternut never
worked so well!

The FD operation went really well and I only had to give up when the
traditional Field Day lightning storms showed up with a vengeance! The
thing is probably still there in the field, but I have no idea who owns
the place now.

* Historical note. Roger was also responsible for the rhombic antennas
out in the woods near Strike. Some of the support poles and a bit of
wire are all that is left of that installation. I always thought that it
would be fun to "load them up" and see what happens. The ravages of
nature have almost completely eaten them up.

Hi everyone,

Kind of a strange request but will ask here. Looking for anyone with
some
treeless/power line&pole-less acreage that would not mind a weekend
camper
every now and then. I would like to put up a balloon or a kite antenna
and
would need at the lowest frequency at least a 600 foot radius clear of
trees
and especially power lines or poles (remember folks, 2x the distance
from a
power line as your antenna is tall! This number works for balloon and
kite
eating trees as well!). A clear field would be just lovely! It would
be
me, the truck and a balloon and or kite antenna.

Would like to stay here in the county if possible but I'll take what I
can
get.

Oh will try to see you all Thursday with the completed antenna/coupler
setup.

Ren..BNY...the crazy one.
