St. Mary's County Dept. of Public Safety - National Weather Service SKYWARN Class
The St. Mary's County Department of Public Safety will be hosting a SKYWARN class on October 25 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. in Leonardtown, to train citizens to become SKYWARN spotters. SKYWARN is a volunteer program which trains citizens to become severe weather spotters. These volunteers help keep their local communities safe by providing timely and accurate reports of severe weather to the National Weather Service. SKYWARN spotters provide essential information for all types of weather hazards including severe thunderstorms, flash floods, tornadoes and severe winter storms. The National Weather Service and the St. Mary's County Department of Safety encourage anyone with an interest in public service who have access to communication, such as a HAM radio, to join the SKYWARN program. This free class will last approximately two hours and includes the following cirriculum: Basics of thunderstorm development, Fundamentals of storm structure, Indentifying potential severe weather features, Information to report, How to report information and Basic severe weather safety. Register by email for SKYWARN Basic I to mailto:ema at smarys.com. For more information, please call the Department of Public Safety, Emergency Management Division at 301-475-4200, extension 2124.
