I've got three cool projects for the club members to take up in the next few
months (if anyone is interested).
The first is a Fox-Delta Fox View 3. I got this a few months ago, but have
not had time to program it or work on it. It's an 4x 20 LCD based APRS (or
other packet) decoder that just needs 12 volts and the audio from a packet
receiver (basically a radio tuned to 144.390). No computer is needed to view
the APRS data. Here is the address for more info:

Next is a FoxDigi. It's basically an APRS digipeater that has low power
consumption. We'd like to get this set up on the K3NAL digipeater in
Lexington Park so it can be converted to solar power next year (yet another
project). Here is the address for more info:

We also have some KPC-3 Plus digipeaters that are looking for a home in
northern St. Mary's until we can get N3PX-2 back on the air.
Also there is a Argent OpenTracker if someone wants to make a portable
tracking device for the club. I had it in an ammo box with a half watt TX
for a while, but never found much use for it.
The third project is a MoenComm D*interface board that just came in this
week). It connects to a PC and will operate as a D* hotspot (with a
transceiver) or a repeater (with 9600 baud radios). It's possible that St.
Mary's county would work great with a few D* hotspots, or maybe it needs a
D* repeater. In either case, this unit comes with a license to connect to
the D* network. Here is the web site: http://www.moencomm.com/
It may be a good topic for a meeting discussion on what to do for D* in this
area. In any case, this is a very inexpensive way to get D* on the air in
the county. Unfortunately, there are not many tall towers available (for
free) that will cover the entire county with D*, so it will most likely
always be a partial county solution.
Some cool things to think about for the club. See you at the swapfest this
week.
