SMCARA meeting 01/27/11

President Pete Butt (WA3UMY) opened the meeting of the Amateur Radio Club at
7:30 p.m., Thursday night, January 27, 2011 at the Patuxent River Naval Air
Museum.

IN MEMORIUM: Walt LeFave became a silent key in December of 2010. He had served
as our recording secretary.

In attendance there were 28 members and guests.

There were no minutes from the November/December meeting as SMCARA celebrated
the Holiday season with a dinner at the Museum on December 11, 2010... The
Treasurer, Lee Jamison (N8HGT) presented his report. We have about $2,000 in
the Treasury. There was only one outstanding bill which was for the planned
purchase of the high frequency antenna which will be place at the back of the
Patuxent River Museum Building. The antenna is for the emergency radio system
located inside the museum building.

The HF radio located in the museum provides long distance communications in the
event of a disaster which would knock out all communications with the local
county area.

The upgrading of the Amateur Emergency System was discussed. The Radio Club has
been requested to provide more signage and updated pictures of amateurs using
the equipment to encourage visiting amateurs to use the equipment and to
demonstrate amateur equipment to the public. The display theme of “from Spark to
Space” needs to be better demonstrated.

The change of the PL tone was discussed next. The members decided to change the
PL tone to 142.6 HZ. The PL tone change will eliminate interference from other
repeaters on our 04/64 frequency.

Pete called for an election of officers from the membership. The results of the
voting were that Pete Butt (WA3UMY) will remain President. Tom Clarke (W4OKW)
will remain as Vice President. Lee Jamison (N8HGT) will remain as Treasurer and
Walt Rupp (W3GYT) was elected as Secretary. David Spore (KB3UBD) volunteered to
be the Field Day Coordinator for 2011. We will not be renting a tent this year
because the Hollywood Fire Department is going to let us use the building close
by our original Field Day sight and we will be out of the rain and can shut the
doors. Eric Heard (N3UN) will continue to give Amateur Radio exams on Saturday
mornings at the museum. Eric will need some volunteer examiners to help with
the exams.

With old and new business completed Tom Clarke (W4OKW) gave a slide presentation
of his DXpedition to St. Lucia. The slide show was interesting and various
types of portable HF communications systems were shown.

The 50/50 raffle was won by Pete Butt and Pete graciously donated his winnings
to the Radio Club Treasury.

Respectfully submitted,
Walt Rupp (W3GYT) assisted by Jan (KB3BAW)
