Hello,
This is WX0NET, aka Billy Fanska. My history in spotting began in 1958 as
being involved in the tornado that struck El Dorado, Kansas. At only 2
years old, I still have memories of this event. My father was a police
officer in El Dorado for over 30 years. I used to go spotting with him on
the bridge over Highway 54 on Highway 196 just to the West of El Dorado.
This was before Skywarn was conceived. My travels around the world as a US
Marine have put me in the middle of sand storms in the Middle East,
hurricanes on the East Coast, earthquakes on the West Coast and super
typhoons in the Far East. I've been involved in fighting prairie fires and
mitigating actions for tsunami's. My current employment as an oil worker
has allowed me to be trained as a Hazmat first responder, a Board Certified
Industrial Firefighter, and keeps my CPR/First Aid training current.
Additionally, I have completed several Skywarn seminars, MetEd courses,
FEMA Courses, ARRL Courses, Skywarn Spotter.org courses, and several other
FEMA, NIMS, and weather related courses. I am a General Class Amateur Radio
Operator (HAM) and run mobile all the time.
My latest initiative as a Weather Ready Ambassador is to establish a
seamless communication network between Kansas and Oklahoma where we share
an abundance of severe weather. The network is currently known as the
Kan-Okla ARES and Weather Net.This radio net also strives to improve
emergency communications in rural areas between Tulsa, Oklahoma City, and
Wichita, Kansas, and to recruit Skywarn Spotters and ARES members. We
welcome any Amateur Radio Operator who shares the vision of helping our
rural communities, and anyone who would like to become a HAM Emergency
Radio Operator (HERO!!!).
