Subject: [Cometupdates] COMET's Advisory Panel Seeking input, especially
from the Private Sector
To: announce at comet.ucar.edu

Greetings, Colleagues in the Weather and Climate Enterprise,

As Chair of the UCAR Cooperative Operational Meteorology Education and
Training (COMET) Program Advisory Panel, we recently conducted a survey of
members in the Weather and Climate Enterprise, and received very valuable
feedback on the needs of industry/private sector for meteorological
education and training.

The Advisory Panel would like to get your feedback on what we heard, and
what we are considering proposing to COMET's Executive Board. Please
consider providing input via my email below on some or all of the following
topics and questions.

*Private Sector Way Forward: Possible Options for COMET*

1. Further (for a fee) Virtual Course Delivery

a. Audience extends from university to government to private sector

b. Develop tailored virtual courses to private sector?

2. Accreditation for specific meteorological expertise *or* credits as
part of continued professional development

a. What is the pathway for determining desire amongst private sector?

b. Who are the right people to ask?

c. Partnering with accreditation agencies?

3. Consider developing an “Introduction to Weather” course to educate
customers on the value/use of weather information

4. Target organizations who demand high quality weather information

a. Who are they?

b. Develop training to help them get the most out of this
information (ties into #4).

5. Is there a demand for training via apps on mobile devices?

6. Obstacles to using COMET:

a. Time

b. Cost

c. Lack of tailored training material

7. Possible Next Steps:

a. *Develop Tailored Virtual Courses*: Develop courses that suit a
specific need; saves money vs residence courses, and allow multiple
attendees from different parts of industry

b. *Accreditation for specific meteorological expertise or credits as
part of continued professional development*: Partner with accreditation
agencies to promote Continued Professional Development; could provide
competitive advantage to those with accreditation

c. *Develop an Introduction to Weather Course for customers of weather
consultation*: provides an understanding of the economic value of weather

I would very much appreciate an opportunity to follow-up with you based on
your feedback, as this is important to the future direction of COMET. Please
contact me at my email "ken.carey"atsymbolhere"ertcorp"

Best regards,
Ken
