Yes Carl, I use text messaging to alert selected members who have
voluntarily opted in to being alerted in such a way.

All cell providers with text messaging service have POP3/SMTP servers that
can transmit text messages to a phone from an Outlook Distribution list.

For example, all Verizon customers can receive text messages at
##########@vtext.com where the # represents the 10 digit phone number.

For Alltel it is ##########@message.alltel.net.

I am sorry, but I do not know the address formats for the other cell
providers since only Verizon works here on the lee side of the Great Smoky
Mountains, and then only in 40 percent of the area.

I just created a mail distribution list in Microsoft Outlook called SW
Carolina SKYWARN Text Notification. You put the message in the subject line
and it comes out as a text on their phone.

I have found that it is very important to ask people if they want to be on
such a distribution list. Not everyone pays a set fee to receive a certain
number of messages per month because they choose, as a rule, not to use text
messaging. For those people, the messages cost from $0.25 to $1.99 per
message, which is a place you may not wish to be.

Greetings all,

Is anybody out there using a text messaging service for call out of the
SKYWARN memebrs? I am looking for options and would prefer a free service if
there is one available.

What are you all using for call outs?

Thanks for sharing!
