The COMET Program is pleased to announce the publication of the new lesson,
"Introduction to Electromagnetic and Electro-Optical Propagation". This
1.5-hour lesson describes the properties of electromagnetic (EM) and
electro-optical (EO) radiation and how their propagation is affected by the
atmosphere and weather. Atmospheric variables that affect EM propagation
include temperature, moisture, pressure, and composition. These variables
control processes including refraction, absorption, and scattering.
The intended audience for Introduction to Electromagnetic and
Electro-Optical Propagation is Naval Aerographer's Mates tasked with
forecasting weather impacts on sensors including radar detection and
infrared and visible imaging. However, with its emphasis on fundamental
physics, the lesson should also benefit students and operational
forecasters who wish to understand atmospheric effects on EM-EO
