Russ Mills, great to have you on board. I had to look up the 804 area code
to figure out what state you were in, although I was already pretty sure it
was Virginia since I used to live in that great Commonwealth.
Anyway, in addition to the national website http://www.arrl.org, I would
suggest the Richmond Amateur Radio Club, W4ZA at http://rarclub.net. A
quick look at their site indicates they just recently started a new set of
ham radio classes on Feb 25th..perhaps you could join and catch up.
And, of course, http://www.QRZ.com has all the names, call signs, and
registered station addresses of every ham in not only the US but most of the
world.
PS, you can find the Technician Class training manual for less money on
Amazon than directly from the ARRL. The technician class is the entry class
license and requires you to learn basic electronic theory, some radio
propagation theory, proper antenna matching, the inverse relationship
between frequency and wavelength, and, of course, Part 97 of the FCC rules
and regs. This license class is allowed to operate on Single Side Band in a
small part of the 10 meter (28 MHz) band, and FM on all the higher bands
within the amateur spectrum.

Does anyone have any good links to information about how to get started in
amateur radio?
Thanks
