[Skywarn] Amateur Storm Chasers Cause Congestion in Severe Weather [feedly]

RE: There is nothing that can be done. Ah, my friend, not true. You make
the important point that "they must be obeying traffic laws." Many of them
don't, or we would not hear stories of being rear ended or of 80 cars
obstructing traffic (both are traffic infractions). And, of course, the
police can close any publicly owned road for any legitimate reason (Failure
to Obey Officer--2nd degree Misdemeanor). Unfortunately, the police are too
busy trying to respond to help the injured where the tornado has already hit
or has caused traffic crashes to stop foolish chasers.

The author is a 28 year veteran law enforcement officer who retired in good
standing from the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office in Largo, Florida.

PS: In early January, when we had our first real snow this year here in the
Great Smoky Mountains, US 129 from Blairsville, GA was closed at the State
Line by the State Highway Patrol after about the 5th car skid off the road
and flipped over the embankment. If you did not have an NC plate and a
Cherokee County address, you did not enter NC until the highway was cleared
of ice and snow. Same reasoning, different scenario.

Pay someone to chase tornadoes? Are they out of their minds? All for a
little thrill and fame, while putting themselves and others at risk.

I'm a storm spotter with advanced training, I've no training in chasing
tornadoes. It is not recommended in training, unless you have the
opportunity at a seriously safe distance. If and only if I was able to
adhering to the above, I may for a short while. But what the article
indicates, no.
