[Skywarn] Skywarn

Burt, I used to be the SKYWARN coordinator for Pinellas County, FL from 1994
to 1999 and again from 2002 to 2011, before moving to NC. The repeater book
shows 145.490- PL 123.0 to be the ARES/ACS repeater for Sumter County, FL.
Sumter County is located in the Tampa Bay WSFO CWA, FLZ043, FLC119, SAME
FIPS code 012119. The only wide-area network used by WSFO KTBW is the NI4CE
linked repeater system (www.ni4ce.org), but the closest repeater in that
system to The Villages would be quite a distance, located in Holiday, FL at
500 ft ASL.

My recommendation to you is to scan your certificate from Maryland and
attach it to an e-mail message to daniel.noah at noaa.gov. Dan is the WCM at
WSFO Tampa Bay in Ruskin, and he is a ham radio operator. Spotter numbers
in the WSFO Tampa Bay Area are 3 letters and 3 numbers, with the three
letters representing the county (yours would be SUM-###). If you
certificate has not expired, he may be willing to enter you into their
database. If not, the next and last training class available this year is
in Pasco County on June 7 at 7 pm at the Pasco County EOC according to their
website http://www.srh.noaa.gov/tbw/?n=skywarn .

You will find that wide area linked coverage is rare in Florida due to the
flat terrain. Absent any hills or mountains on which to put a repeater, the
local hams have to rely on the generosity of tall building and antenna tower
owners upon which to place amateur antennas. Therefore, most SKYWARN nets
are based in the individual county that is being affected.

PS, despite being the lightening capital of the US, most severe weather
warnings in Florida are short-fuse warnings for pop up storms that reach
severe levels. Supercell formation is extremely rare, as is hail. Most
tornadoes that do form are either waterspouts that move on shore or very
difficult to see as they are rain-wrapped.

Good luck with your quest.

Lloyd,
I moved down to The Villages, FL in Nov from MD & want to continue my
Skywarn participation.  I received my training on 3/13/2010
(Baltimore/Washington area), No.# HW017.
Do I need a new number?  Call in telephone number?  I also installed a Davis
Vantage VUE weather station on the house.
Is there a Skywarn weather Net for  Radio Amateurs down here?
