Subject: [Cometupdates] New from COMET: Introduction to Ensembles:
Forecasting Hurricane Sandy
To: announce at comet.ucar.edu
Greetings,
The COMET Program is pleased to announce the publication of the new
module, "Introduction to Ensembles: Forecasting Hurricane Sandy". This
module provides an introduction to ensemble forecast systems with an
operational case study of Hurricane Sandy. This 1.5-hour module
concentrates on model ensembles from NCEP and FNMOC available to
forecasters in the U.S. Navy, including NAEFS (North American Ensemble
Forecast System), and NUOPC (National Unified Operational Prediction
Capability). Probabilistic medium to long-range forecasts of winds and
waves developed from these ensemble forecast systems are applied to a
ship transit and coastal resource protection. Short, stand-alone
lessons integrated in the case study provide information on ensemble
statistics, products, bias correction and verification. Additional
lessons address multimodel ensembles, extreme events, and automated
forecasting.
The intended audience for Introduction to Ensembles: Forecasting
Hurricane Sandy is any operational forecaster who is unfamiliar with
ensembles and probabilistic forecasting. Please follow this link to
the MetEd description page that provides additional information and a
link to begin the module: Introduction to Ensembles: Forecasting
Hurricane Sandy
